World Council of Churches calls for prayers for an end to the Middle East conflict

September 16, 2016

Genf (epd). The World Council of Churches has called upon Christians to pray for peaceful relations between Palestinians and Israelis. During the World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel (WWPPI) starting on 18 September they can express their support for a nonviolent resolution of the Middle East conflict, the World Council of Churches (WCC) stated.

The theme for this year's WWPPI is "dismantling barriers", general secretary Olav Fykse Tveit wrote to the just under 350 WCC member churches. Besides the separation barrier (wall), many barriers stand in the way of flourishing in Israel and Palestine, e.g. the barriers of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

The WCC has been calling on Israel for years to end the occupation of the Palestinian territories that has existed since 1967. Critics accuse the WCC of being one-sided in supporting the Palestinians.
