Churches call for legal resettlement of refugees

March 23. 2016

Geneva (epd). International church organisations have called on European governments to provide more organised resettlement of refugees. Resettlement "offers an entirely safe and legal alternative to risky passages across the Mediterranean or other European borders," declared the Conference of European Churches (CEC), the Churches Commission on Migrants in Europe (CCME) and the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Brussels and Geneva.

The ecumenical organisations add that desperate people would no longer have to resort to smugglers to find safety. Resettlement could give refugees from Syria and other conflict countries a new life in safety, they underline.

The call came in a letter from CCME, CEC and WCC to their European member churches and partner organisations, urging them to lobby their national governments and parliaments for more organised resettlements. This advocacy was timely as governments were preparing for a high level UNHCR pledging conference on resettlement on 30 March in Geneva.

The UNHCR resettles groups of people from refugee camps in host countries which normally simplifies the asylum process.
