Westphalian church president slams European policy of sealing off its borders

May 07, 2014

Dortmund (epd). Annette Kurschus, president of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia (the fourth largest German regional church), has called for a radical turnabout in European refugee policy. It is a scandal that refugees are dying outside the borders of "fortress" Europe, she declared in Dortmund on Tuesday evening. "Europe must not build its prosperity and its technological progress on a strategy of deterrence that condones the possibility of refugees dying on its doorstep," she asserted.

"Let us not close our eyes and our hearts to the situations of hardship that are being brought close to us," Kurschus appealed. Every African who dies from drowning is "an indictment of the policy of closed borders".
