Women's World Day of Prayer focus on France in 2013

January 02, 2013

Munich (epd). This year the international Women's World Day of Prayer (WDP) on 1 March will focus on France. In the light of the theme "I was a stranger and you welcomed me", congregations of different denominations in Germany will find out about the situation in their neighboring country. The order of service was drawn up by women from French churches, as reported by the German World Day of Prayer committee in Stein near Nuremberg.

A strict separation of church and state is enshrined in the French constitution. Since 1905 the country has been a model of a secular state. According to statistics, 50 to 80 percent of the population is Roman Catholic.

The World Day of Prayer traditionally takes place on the first Friday in March. 170 countries take part around the globe. WDP project work is financed from the annual collection at the services. There are projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific and Europe. Since 1975 the German WDP Committee has supported almost 6000 projects in approximately 150 countries with contributions totaling over EUR 61 million.
