As G8 meets, churches' leader sounds warning on Haiti

June 25, 2010

Grand Rapids, Michigan (ENI). The head of the World Council of Churches has appealed to world leaders gathering in Canada to ensure that long-term development assistance is provided for Haiti, still reeling from a devastating January earthquake. "There is a great need for a more-long term perspective for aid and not just an emergency response," WCC general secretary the Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit told ENInews after leading a 14-16 June delegation of Christian leaders from around the world to offer support to Haitian churches. Haiti is among countries that have been invited to a meeting on development and security issues on the sidelines of the G8 meeting of industrial countries in Huntsville, in the Canadian province of Ontario from 24 to 25 June. The WCC leader warned of a lack of coordination in aid and development efforts for Haiti, and said there needs to be ways of ensuring that development assistance is accountable to Haitians.
