UN now looks to faith leaders, to help end violence against women

November 26, 2009

Geneva (ENI). Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu has joined a "Network of Men Leaders" set up by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to combat violence against women. "You are a weak man if you use your physical superiority to assault and brutalise women," said Tutu in a U.N. video clip to mark the launch of the network for the 10th anniversary on 25 November of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women."A society that permits violence against women is a society that is on the way out," said Tutu, the former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town who won his Nobel Peace Prize during the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.
