March 27, 2009

Wittenberg (ENI). The Rev. Ilse Junkermann has been elected the fourth woman bishop in the history of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), the country's main Protestant grouping, and the first to lead a regional church in former communist-ruled East Germany. On 21 March, 51-year-old Junkermann was elected in Wittenberg to head the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, one of the 22 regional Protestant churches that make up the EKD. Junkermann will begin her ten-year term as bishop on 29 August. The church she will lead largely covers the territory of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, which after the Second World War was part of East Germany, until German unification in 1990.
