Global church grouping to elect new leader at Geneva meeting

August 26, 2009

Geneva (ENI). The main governing body of the World Council of Churches, its central committee, starts an eight-day meeting on 26 August during which it will elect a new general secretary to succeed the Rev. Samuel Kobia, a Methodist from Kenya. Kobia had announced at the last meeting of the Central Committee in February 2008 that for "personal reasons" he would not seek a second term in office at the head of the Geneva-based grouping that now has 349 member churches, principally Anglican, Orthodox, and Protestant.
